It was a chain reaction, an unstoppable cascade. But rather than machines, it was human beings amplifying each other, the wisdom of crowds writ large, the society of minds spreading far and wide. To know everything, to understand all, to appreciate the totality of nature, of literature, of mathematics, of the arts. And to be free, at last, of duplicity and mendacity, of concerns about reputation, of establishing hierarchies, of all the game playing that had gone with petty individuality. It liberated so much of the intellect, so much energy—and it brought peace. Susan Dawson didn't regret the old life she'd lived—a life she, and everyone, would always remember—but this new existence was so much greater, so much more fulfilling, so much more stimulating. The Mongoliad - Neal Stephenson and Greg Bear and Mark Teppo

Stephenson, Bear and Teppo do Howard, Lamb and Mundy. In alternate history style. Which is really rather interesting. Especially growing out of a shared world project and community as it has done. e.g. http://mongoliad.com/ Genghis Khan is dead, his sons are busy remorselessly conquering Europe with the odd stop for entertainment. Lots of slaughter, etc. Rome and others are desperate to come up with something to slow the Mongols down a little to give them time to organise some sort of resistance. The current head Khan has invited representatives to a gladiatorial circus of sorts and therein lies an opportunity. If the current head Khan buys the farm, they all have to go home to pick a new one, derailing the war effort. So assassination high mortality rate mission time it is for the warrior knights of the Shield Brothers and the young woman guiding them. You can tell they have worked hard on this to do their inspirations justice and it will be interesting to see where it goes. 3.5 out of 5

Yet across the pavement came clearly now the light tapping of a woman's feet." This leads him to monstrous vampiric alien, and to the aid of one his thralls, above. The Mandel Files Volume 2 - Peter F. Hamilton

As it says, the third Mandel novel. Possible alien vegetation discovery. Impressively, this trilogy continues the quality work as again Event Horizon and particularly Julia Evans need Greg Mandel's help. There are plenty of dodgy characters to be dealt with in this novel as they try and find out what happened to her father, and where the frack that the strange flower delivery Julia received actually came from. Good stuff. 4 out of 5

The Mandel Files Volume 1 - Peter F. Hamilton

Psychic corporate sleuthing. Greg Mandel is literally a psychic detective, an ability given to him via technology and a stint in the military. So not a psychic detective in the ghost busting sense, at all. This very nasty far left government has since collapsed, leaving old pommieland in a semi-parlous rebuilding situation. Mandel is hired to look into both thefts, and attacks on a digital personality, via that personalities granddaughter. 4 out of 5 Chest mangled cosmologist investigation. The growing corporate power Event Horizon is again involved here, as one of its star researchers is found dead, and mutilated to go along with it, which seems rather strange. A job for psi-cop Greg Mandel, who had happily been minding his own business but is talked into taking on this case. Plenty of people wanted this work stopped, too, so he will be one busy investigator. Just as good as the last book. 4 out of 5 4.5 out of 5

There's a problem for them and some others in the area. Something is hunting them. Vampire batpeople, no less. 3 out of 5 Ok. Something in that moonshine in these hillbilly hamlets it seems. Because here we have a book where a goth girl and her mum get to move to one. Only problem is the ghost of the dead wife her mother is replacing. That and the scarecrow dressing goddess worshipping maniac and his undead murderous ancestor. Oh yeah, and his flock of man-eating goats! Silversands - Gareth L. Powell

An highly polished SF outing in his Tanguy future history. Alien wormhole technology allowes interstellar travel, but only randomly. The gates are currently not programmable leading to highly sporadic inter-colony communication. Silversands is a rebel example of such to some degree, where a wealthy businessman built a ship and ventured outwards sans government approval and started a colony. Which, on maturing is afflicted with the usual human problems of corruption and skullduggery. And spies for Earth posing as others to try and protect the secrets a dead woman's artificial intelligence remnant holds. Becoming involved with this after a ship suddenly turns up carrying this AI are a young woman on board, a long-lived Silversands law enforcement officer, a broke spaceplane pilot and his girlfriend along with the aforementioned politicos and spooks. 4 out of 5

Champion of Mars - Guy Haley

Another novel in the same Future History as that of his Richards and Klein works. This new Planetary Romance definitely takes Future History to the extreme as the beginnings of Martian settlement feature in one story strand, merely three years after the AI Five crisis that was some years in the past in the other stories. Featuring an AI-phobic biologist. The second major strand relates to the title, where the greatest warrior, his powered armour and his AI companion tire of their existence and decide to change, leading him deep into a plot to free humanity. Technology here allows serial immortality. All on a baroque future Mars. The rest of it loops back and around and has interludes at various periods between these two extremes of three years post Five crisis and tens of thousands of years in the future as you begin to realise who the various people are in the different time frames. 3.5 out of 5

Lifeforce - Colin Wilson

The Space Vampires - Colin Wilson
It is not often you see this in a dedication, not in a story:

I must also express my warmest thanks to Count Olof de la Gardie, both for his hospitality at Raback, and for allowing me to inspect family papers relating to his ancestor Count Magnus.

Energy sucking vampires from space, you got it.

Some not too swift characters, as well :

"That's easily explained. We both had a session with the Prime Minister two days ago. He doesn't believe these vampires are dangerous. So neither of us trusts him."

It takes a lack of belief in vampires to not trust a politician? No wonder the space vamps went for your area.

A lawyer calls a son in to get a package his mother has left for him in the case of incapacitation or death. She has Alzheimer's and deteriorated quite badly, so now is the time he decides.

It turns out she was the Black Stiletto, via her diaries. Imagine if the Huntress grew up poor and you get a bit of the idea, complete with mafia boyfriends. Also with some enhanced senses and agility, low-rent spider sense and all. She runs away to - yes, you guessed it, try not to fall asleep - New York City. Gets a job when a friendly waitress lies about her age, learns to box and karate and to sneak around town vigilante style on missions of vengeance.

And in the present and old enemy has finally been paroled from prison.

Hard to say which is more tedious, the book, or the movie. American film, so more shagging in the book I guess. Sable - Mike Grell

Grell does a fine job of adapting the Sable origin to prose, with the Rhodesian wife and background and what happens after that life is destroyed. There are various episodes with what happens afterwards when he becomes a rogue assassin in Africa with countries becoming Majority Rule and the turmoil that causes, then a rescue mission, the children's author bit. Mercenary author, so funny. Then his past coming back with a bullet.

The only thing you notice from this 'period piece' that otherwise stops it being a perfectly modern thriller is the complete absence of mobile phones and the internet, even in places like Nairobi. The novel is from the turn of the century. The Sable series is of course from the 1980s and that really is the tech level in the novel.

Actually give this a bit more than 3.5.
