The Detachment - Barry Eisler

The most recent job John Rain was involved with was for higher stakes. Energy supply. After four years off Rain gets approached again. This time he and Dox, along with Treven and Larison are hired to take out two yank Defense honchos who are apparently planning fake terrorist attacks on the USA to allow them a greater deal of fascist control (and cash, of course).

Now even assassins think this is beyond the pale and agree to help, even though the Colonel involved is as dodgy as a room full of Poison Ballers. Military spook type.

All of course is not as it seems as the foursome are forced to go on the run as the fake attacks and suicide bombings escalate.

Excellent work.

Blood Hunt - Lee Killough

A detective working on some murders finds something disturbing - a vampire. He also ends up as one and ends up trying to trace the vampire, bringing him deep into another world and also a change of cop career locations.

3.5 out of 5

Ancient Eyes - David Niall Wilson

A young man goes back to the old town. Well, the old hamlet if you like. His problem is what goes on at the church there. A good, new-fangled snake cult. Complete with supernatural entities and rituals involving such. Young women, bad things, etc.

Snakes, supernatural and crazy Californian hillbillies in this polished horror novel.

Requiem For An Assassin - Barry Eisler

Hilger showdown.

Which shows that even smart guys can do dumb things. Hilger and what is left of his crew kidnap Dox as a lever to get Rain to perform some assassinations for them. All part of a greater do something about the oil plot involving suborning a port official.

So yeah, Rain wants to kill him. And that usually works, especially if the CIA and Mossad want him dead too.

Darkness Falling - Peter Crowther

The Langoliers meets Invasion of the Zombie Body Snatchers.

Or a few people left around after a strange electromagnetic incident find out that the fellow that all wear shades and gloves are out to get them. And something is in their heads.

The Last Assassin - Barry Eisler

Here's a three-way teamup for Rain and company as a dying Tatsu has a request. Finally get rid of Yamaoto so he can expire in peace.

Rain agrees and convinces Delilah to help. Things get messy when Midori and his son are endangered by Rain's existence as they are a link to find him. Yamaoto being hard to get to has to get drawn out of hiding by the good old make him think his business partner is out to get him trick.

So it is highpriced nightclub assault time.

4 out of 5

Wind Slayers - Robert W. Walker

A lot is packed into this novel, the third of a series of which I have not read the other two.

A special unit of cops gets some dangerous situations in a unit that bears the series name.

Their lead also had Internal Affairs and FBI problems. As well as wanting some vigilante revenge about the people that kidnapped his family.

Plenty is packed into this one - crimelords, assassins, dumb hoods, partners who are partners, shootouts, insane actors and their even worse mothers so the first two should have some interest, too.

This is the opposite of slow, despite the length.

3.5 out of 5

Zombie Kong - James Roy Daley

A man is swallowed by a giant undead ape and his spousal unit has to try and get him back.

The Creeping Death - Maxwell Grant

The Shadow has to deal with a madman who wants all the world's gold supply - employing his own titular method of getting rid of people to help him to get there. Even if they are Secret Service agents.

3 out of 5

Killing Rain - Barry Eisler

This time it is the Mossad that wants Rain to remove someone - thanks to Delilah's recommendation. And interestingly a couple of small sections are told from Delilah's point of view - sign of increasing importance?

Things go pear-shaped when he is about to knock off his explosives expert target and the man's kid walks in on them. So he just does over a bodyguard or two and a couple of ex-CIA guys. Who are in league with Hilger from the last book.

So he and Dox have to try and get this done so everybody is happy and doesn't want to kill them - Hilger's mob, the Israeli gunman or the CIA.

Add in a newly found nuclear weapons expert of the bad sort to complicate matters.

3.5 out of 5

Shades of Gray - Jackie Kessler and Caitlin Kittredge

The second Icarus project book follows on from the first, as Jet and Iridium deal with the breakdown of the drug and mind control of the Extrahuman population of the USA.

To do so involves one of the good old methods - ask some of the less nasty villains rotting in prison for help. Which of course includes Iridium's father. Some flashbacks in his life are interesting, as well as the history of some of the Corp slaves and head honchos.

And it appears more help is out there to deal with crazed mutated people monsters.

3.5 out of 5

ToxiCity - Libby Fischer Hellman

A young policewoman is involved with a detective in the same force. A distinct no-no by the regulations. He is trying to solve multiple poisoning murders and deal with what happens after they get caught. They both have other women expressing interest in them as a result of the case, which doesn't make things easier. Especially when it appears that the father of the rich cop chaser is the developer that did the project that is the root problem of the series of murders.

3.5 out of 5

Master of the House of Darts - Aliette de Bodard

A third solid entry in this series as now High Priest Acatl has to deal with murder and worse in a magical epidemic. As he has grown to realise more and more, these things are usually the results of a power struggle from those passed over or yet to come into more power - even if your relatives or students.

And monsters. They seem to always use monsters.

3.5 out of 5

Rain Storm - Barry Eisler

Not quite as strong as the first two. Here Rain follows through on his plans to decamp to Brazil for security reasons, in a couple of stages. However, the CIA pulls him back into, wanting him to dispose of an arms dealer. It isn't as simple as that though, pointing out that the CIA right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing. As in attempting to hire an old sniper acquaintance from Afghanistan named Dox to get rid of Rain. This pleases neither of these gentlemen. Further complications ensue as he discovers his target's current girlfriend is actually a Mossad spy.

3.5 out of 5

Dark Prince - David Gemmell

The son of Philip of Macedon?

Alexander of Macedon.

Yeah, that Great guy with the big black horse that took a fancy to taking over the world. First he has to survive being a kid and kidnapped into another universe that still has centaurs and minotaurs. Then getting Greece together with Parmenion's help so they have enough of an army to go and take the Persian Empire away from Darius.

All the while battling Chaos plots to take over Alexander.

3.5 out of 5

Ghost College - Scott Nicholson and J. R. Rain

First of the Ghost Files series apparently.

A couple as ghosthunters. With the woman providing the paranormal power and the bloke the support. Fairly lighthearted for dealing with the dead as the pair banter back and forth in this investigation of a young girl's spirit from old history of the school. So if looking for something breezy, a good choice.

The Bell - Paul Lewis and Steve Lockley

A man goes on holiday, looking for a fairdinkum old fashioned Welsh put to stay it. He finds one including the odd inhabitants who don't look too happy. The couple that owns the place are happy to feed and beer him but when he asks for a room they encourage him not to stay.

As apparently in the past one town killed all the other when there was a plague and when it gets dry enough for the Lake to go down a bone monster comes hunting.

3.5 out of 5

Face of Evil - Lee Goldberg and William Rabkin

Dead Man 1

A man goes skiing with his more competent girlfriend and ends up getting caught in an avalanche.

Some history found out in flashbacks of the relationship between him and his best friend as three months later he thaws out and comes back to life.

His best friend now something evil that needs to be dealt with and a supernatural man keeps appearing to him.

3.5 out of 5

Zombiestan - Mainak Dhar

A special forces operation in Afghanistan comes across something disturbing. Taliban enemies that don't die if you shoot them. Also like to bite their foes.

As tends to happen in these things, this disease spreads exponentially. Those affected show the ability to actually learn. Use tools like rocks and then guns and even vehicles.

In the midst of this an elderly academic, a navy seal, a young man, a young man and her young brother have to try to get to safety because they have something more important than anything else. A boy that has been bitten and not turned into a 'Jiiiiiiiihhhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaad' moaning monster.

Three Survived - Robert Silverberg

Simple kid's book as the author explains in an intro for this republication.

A spaceship's overdrive fails, much damage to craft, so bailing out to a planet is necessary, where three disparate characters have to try and survive the environment and aliens. An intuitive synthesist, a logician and a strong guy.

2.5 out of 5

Ice Hunt - James Rollins

A Fish and Game officer helping with a study on bear populations sees a plane crash. This gets him, his Sheriff ex-wife, his big black dog Bane who invites himself along for a plane escape and the reporter who survived the sabotaged plane involved in a secret special forces and submarine conflict between the USA and Russia over a Russian base from the 1930s. The base has research about people surviving suspended animation for long periods - along with the missing link creatures they had been working on to extract the ability from. Large, ferocious cold-adapted beasties.

Along with a certain Joe Kowalski, who happens to be one of the naval bodies around the place.

3.5 out of 5

Hard Rain - Barry Eisler

It would appear Eisler writes classy but brutal spy novels. The assassin John Rain has moved from Tokyo for business reasons: to make it harder for his enemies to get to him.

Therefore, they get to his hacker friend the old fashioned way. With a prostitute paid to turn his head.

As well as Japanese politicians that don't like him, the CIA still doesn't either. A supposed operation to help reformer politicians deal with Japan's endemic corruption is anything but. Gangsters and spooks and political leaders would rather the graft gravy train continue and a massive collapse happen hopefully after they are out of it than pain now that gets in the way of their profiteering.

Another woman in the picture, too, along with the old flame, plus a lot more expensive aged single malts along with branching out into less sexist killing as he and his fed cop friend look to gain revenge for deaths of colleagues.

A very bad anthology that manages a woeful 2.87 full. Full of dull mediocre adn poor stories, Sherman, Butcher and Shepard aside. And a little imagination from Kressel, at least. Speaking of imagination, lot of writers can't imagine outside the USA when all of fantasy is there to play with.

Avoid.

The Collected Stories of Robert Silverberg Volume 2 To The Dark Star - Robert Silverberg

These stories are from 1962 to 1969, his second SF period. As he points out, trying to give a little more weight to them than stuff he was knocking out with Randall Garrett over beers to support the lifestyle.

From the just about 3.50 average he was highly successfull.

To the Dark Star : Neighbor - Robert Silverberg

The Hunt For Atlantis - Andy McDermott

Your standard cheesy thriller with murdered parents, Atlantean nazis, SAS guys teaming up with good looking scientists, megalomaniacs who may or may not have ulterior genocidal motives - on both sides. An ex-friend from the past that won't mind shooting you for money.

And, of course, a lot of blowing up of stuff.

The Unreasoning Mask - Philip Jose Farmer

The Al-Buraq, a ship capable of instantaneous interstellar travel starts doing its thing with its crew. What they run into isn't very nice. Something is devouring large swathes of interstellar real estate. And what do you do if this is actually something alive? A maker, destroyer or universal being and the means to communicate with.

3 out of 5

The Infinite Battle - David Bischoff

Here's a fun space opera that takes a rather more Blake's 7 take on the Federation as opposed to Star Trek. A woman, brought up by said Federation to be a highly trained agent - finds out she has a brother with a scientific inclination. Despite this being not supposed to happen then stick together. So when he is captured by the enemy, she will do a lot of things to get him back. Including making a deal with a privateer and a sentient ship as things get more and more complicated.

Star Hounds appears to be a series worth checking out the rest of. As a bit of a space opera expert, surprisingly a new one on me.

Dying Memories - Dave Zeltserman

A reporter who suffered through an abusive childhood starts looking into some strange killings. Ones that do not make sense. This leads him into investigating ViGen corporation - who are working into advanced medical research. What they are really up to is a lot nastier - mind control via drug. all in the aims of societal control.

Strange Attractors - Jeffrey A. Carver

Opened the second of this series first apparently, but no big deal. Space adventure with a guy and his robots. And strange boojum things and all of course being a long way from home. Shipworlds, meerkat-like aliens. And our protagonist is no emo whiner loser. Pretty much nothing fazes him, which is very entertaining. Although 'wow, cool' I am sure he is thinking a few times. Interesting enough.

3 out of 5

God Stalk - P. C. Hodgell

God Stalk is an interesting novel. A fantasy novel set in a city and with a ton of stuff thrown in. No interminable farmboy wanderings or 7 page descriptions of a pants leg.

Jame, a little like Telzey Amberdon has that je ne sais quoi -- and you certainly don't know what she is going to get up to next. Stealing pants or killing gods. Exotic dancing or cat rescuing.

So certainly not dull and has a bit of charm as her heritage and superpowers begin to catch up with her.

Silent Partner - Leigh Brackett

A Southern Californian trust fund baby does what you would expect in the late sixties. Apart from only drinking vodka, anyway. And being involved in an Import-Export business with an Iranian friend from his university days.

Their other friend buys into the business, and ends up dying when he goes to Iran. The dead man's fiancee is suspicious and rightly so, as it turns out. Our rich boy gets a visit from the spooks - it appears that his old friend is a reactionary that would like a return to the old days and is plotting revolution. Tony may be able to help trap him, knowing him better than others.

The second of this series is another breezy romp through this softboiled Nightside, again, as everyone's favorite zombie detective gets involved in the middle of yet another conflict. Lords vs Lords, hew lot vs old lot. Any of that is not really good and preferably to be avoided. Especially with a pregnant vampire girlfriend and another bloodsucking cyberjournalist along to document.

Lion of Macedon - David Gemmell

Set in a time around 100 years after 300 Spartans delayed a Persian army, Parmenion is a half-Macedonian Spartan training to be a warrior. And getting lots of racist abuse while doing so. Luckily for him the famous Xenophon (yes, that one) lends a hand and keeps him from getting himself killed after killing in a fight and falling for and into the intended bride of another.

Rather peeved at his treatment he sets out to bring Sparta down. The way to do it? Thebes. So he plots and plans until the Thebans have the military capacity and allies to face the Spartans in open warfare.

In the second part, a young hostage prince in Thebes: Philip of Macedon is now King of Parmenion's mother's homeland. And all throughout priestesses both for and against battle sorcerously to manipulate the rest of the people and either cause or prevent the birth of a very bad man - or a very accomplished one with a chance to do great things.

BEYOND 33000 - The 2011 Fiction Season Coaches by score

In the Coaching Game, you only need 3 works edited to qualify. For coaching, anthologies and magazines count. There are 331 overall editors and teamups, with 94 qualifiers.

Gordon Van Gelder has stalled because FSF now only available on Kindle, literally and DRMed - can't use it on Kindle 4 PC. Desktop being where I read all the mags it is useless - and back issues may also disappear? Have a couple of issues of the no-story free one to look at, but those won't be added here. John Joseph Adams has a

Living Dead 2 anthology I haven't finished, a new Wizards and power armour books coming out. His climb from his current 10th spot will slow now that two magazines are one, as well. Andy Cox made a late season recovery with a few more Interzones appearing to enable him to hold down the current 7th spot.
