Sable - Mike Grell

Grell does a fine job of adapting the Sable origin to prose, with the Rhodesian wife and background and what happens after that life is destroyed. There are various episodes with what happens afterwards when he becomes a rogue assassin in Africa with countries becoming Majority Rule and the turmoil that causes, then a rescue mission, the children's author bit. Mercenary author, so funny. Then his past coming back with a bullet.

The only thing you notice from this 'period piece' that otherwise stops it being a perfectly modern thriller is the complete absence of mobile phones and the internet, even in places like Nairobi. The novel is from the turn of the century. The Sable series is of course from the 1980s and that really is the tech level in the novel.

Actually give this a bit more than 3.5.

3.5 out of 5
