The Black Stiletto - Raymond Benson

A lawyer calls a son in to get a package his mother has left for him in the case of incapacitation or death. She has Alzheimer's and deteriorated quite badly, so now is the time he decides.

It turns out she was the Black Stiletto, via her diaries. Imagine if the Huntress grew up poor and you get a bit of the idea, complete with mafia boyfriends. Also with some enhanced senses and agility, low-rent spider sense and all. She runs away to - yes, you guessed it, try not to fall asleep - New York City. Gets a job when a friendly waitress lies about her age, learns to box and karate and to sneak around town vigilante style on missions of vengeance.

And in the present and old enemy has finally been paroled from prison.
