James Clavell's Tai-Pan is a historical type novel set in Hong Kong, where the British are just gaining a strong presence. Dirk Struan is a main character, and is one of these Tai-Pans, or powerful and power merchants, you could say.
Characters like this of course can be somewhat dodgy, and plenty of them are here.
