The Bruce is in a lot of trouble here, lost and on the run in the wilderness, his family captured or killed. He is forced to live as a hermit, and has an epiphany in a cave. He establishes a power base in the North (with some help from a mistress who is fond of him), uniting the clans and the lowlanders, overcoming distrust. This leads to the famous battle at Bannockburn.
