A computer prediction suggests the planet Lurion will become aggressive enough with the next 67 years to get Earth embroiled in a war - once that is extremely likely to destroy the planet.

How to fix this? Destroy Lurion first. This requires sending five spies there at staggered intervals with devices to activate a planet killer weapon. Problem there is some of them have to wait months while the others get opportunity to land of a planet with few humans.

After being there some time and gaining a girlfriend - who would die when the weapon was set off - the lead agent discovers a growing band of locals who oppose the conservatives in power. A factor he doesn't think his Security Agency masters took into account before the planet kill determination.

A lifeboat trip to a jungle planet and rescue leads him to discover a plot to send matter duplicators to Earth - not started overtly, but presumably with the aim of economic destabilisation.

A man finds a valuable metallic asteroid and files a claim. Which promptly disappears. Backtracking, he finds the large mining cartel he turned down when they offered him a job are behind it. Not for the value of the metal, but because of the find of a solitary advanced alien of immense age, complete with his gear.
