Four mercenary comrades manage to get past a beastmen army into a city. Rescued by a lancer charge they are seriously wounded and take a month to recover.
Unfortunately for them in that time a new beastmen king has taken over. His brain actually works. So the city rulers have a scheme, too, send the mercenaries out as escort for a dealmaker. Not knowing what the deal is they are soon on the run from beastmen as are the people that make it out of the city alive.
