The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins

Exactly what you would expect in this book for kids. A simplistic dystopia with simple language - and what a surprise - in what was the USA. This one goes in for a bit of bread and circuses after a previous rebellion. Every year two kids are chosen to fight Battle Royale style but lower tech, with the last one standing allowed to live a life of comparative luxury afterwards and win a few comforts for their own state.

The hero of the story volunteers to take her 12 year old sister's place and sets forth to begin displeasing the political rulers as signs of rebellion begin to grow.
