In a future where everyone wears thigh (or hip) boots and jumpsuits and are rather more liberated a cop has to deal with losing a partner to injury. Attempted murder by monofilament garotte has left him blinded, not long before he is off to an interstellar colony with his wife.
One such colony ship has run into trouble it is found as a message is sent back. Huge numbers of their human popsicles has died. The hot cops chase bad guy novel revolves around the mystery of tracking down why. A case of corruption and fraud - selling them lesser ship and engine technology than they paid for.
