The Damned Busters - Matthew Hughes

Matthew Hughes is one of the right people to write a wry, urbane deal with the devil type story.

It is more entertaining than that, however. Here, our protagonist, thanks to his single-minded high functioning autistic style actuarial obsessions is able to throw Hell into a bit of a bureaucratic tizz. He's also an honest man without the desire for anything. Therefore no soul-selling.

What he gets out of agreeing to help old Lucifer out to some degree is a deal. Two hours a day he gets his own demon servant.

What he wants his stogie-chomping imp with a fondness for grog and poker to do? Make him into a superhero, so he can fight crime. Add a complication that the owner of his company he works for starts an actuarial unit to look at analysing crime patterns - which he has been seconded to.

How long can you fake being your own Jimmy Olsen for?

Diverting.
