An ex-convict ex-detective comes across a woman being tortured by a group of armed men up to something odd - he manages to kill them and save her after an arduous trek largely carrying her. What they are after is a strange artifact - an artificial intelligence with what appears to be near-omniscience but its own terrifying ulterior motives.
That is not all, as she works for a project that shepherds the technology that comes through the titular portal, the result of a Very Large Ion Collider project going wrong in 1978, amusingly. This Whisper device is one of those things. Other bad and good stuff arrives - lots of which bad people would like to have, including one of the ex-project heads, the man responsible for our heroine's torture in an attempt to gain back the device. Said intelligence also has plans for our hero.
Very solid.
