Most people broke and plenty starving - with one escape is free access to a worldwide second life type program - designed by our dead billionaire, hence the wealth. Whoever wins will get control with this amount of money. So for the corporate fascists it is worth killing over if they can get away with it when so many people are obsessed with this quest and also hate them.
Cue epic online battle with spaceships, giant robots and video games.
