Ravenheart - David Gemmell

A young Southern Rigante man is a protege of an older rogue, warrior and cattle rustler. Not a fan of school, a bit of a hothead. A young woman of the nationality of the rulers is murdered because of her association with him. He takes lethal revenge and heads North, where the Rigante have more power. He finds himself taken with the daughter of the Black Rigante ruler and hence further embroiled in the coming conflict because of an ambitious and not too bright Varlish captain.

The setting here moves further forward in time from the time of Connavar and then Bane, with cannon and musket technology now available to fight with, armour is a thing of the past. The Rigante need a bold, surprising move if they are not going to be stuck in a long, drawn-out guerilla war before civil war draws the Varlish attention away.
