Set in a time around 100 years after 300 Spartans delayed a Persian army, Parmenion is a half-Macedonian Spartan training to be a warrior. And getting lots of racist abuse while doing so. Luckily for him the famous Xenophon (yes, that one) lends a hand and keeps him from getting himself killed after killing in a fight and falling for and into the intended bride of another.
Rather peeved at his treatment he sets out to bring Sparta down. The way to do it? Thebes. So he plots and plans until the Thebans have the military capacity and allies to face the Spartans in open warfare.
In the second part, a young hostage prince in Thebes: Philip of Macedon is now King of Parmenion's mother's homeland. And all throughout priestesses both for and against battle sorcerously to manipulate the rest of the people and either cause or prevent the birth of a very bad man - or a very accomplished one with a chance to do great things.
