Here's a fun space opera that takes a rather more Blake's 7 take on the Federation as opposed to Star Trek. A woman, brought up by said Federation to be a highly trained agent - finds out she has a brother with a scientific inclination. Despite this being not supposed to happen then stick together. So when he is captured by the enemy, she will do a lot of things to get him back. Including making a deal with a privateer and a sentient ship as things get more and more complicated.
Star Hounds appears to be a series worth checking out the rest of. As a bit of a space opera expert, surprisingly a new one on me.
