The old two level tie-in caper. Apparently this is a novelisation of a video game, which is itself of course based on a comic.

In fact, a bit of an origin story, briefly showing the young GI solders in training, until they are sent on their first mission.

Which rapidly becomes a complete clusterfuck.

Rogue's fellow troopers and mostly massacred, but he manages to save the biochips of 3, slotting one into his helmet, one into his gun, and one into his pack, giving him some independent assistance.

Another track of the story follows a young man in the opposing army whose brother is killed when Rogue gets involved in the fighting.

Also, lots of double crossing - except when the troopers find out about the existence of female counterparts - one of whom becomes a staunch battlefield friend as they try and hunt down the traitor who sold them out.
