Warriors Of the Steppes - Harold Lamb

Some fine tales of Cossack adventure, here, and the same for neighbouring regions.

There's an introduction by David Drake, as well as by compiler Howard A. Jones, and also included at the end are some letters written to the magazine the stories appeared in, giving some historical background.

The second half of the book is certainly considerably stronger, in general, some of the earlier stories are a bit tedious, and the archaic speech patterns can get a little tiresome when not much is going on.

Especially after the meeting of Khlit and Abdul Dost, the major protagonists of the tales, things heat up.
