Mirkheim - Poul Anderson

A political conflict over a planet with metals in abundance becomes more violent.

There is disagreement between the Polesotechnic League and Commonwealth factions - between humans and the aliens who want to take the place.

What Nicholas van Rijn and his more active subordinate need to do is try and find out how an alien armada suddenly appeared from somewhere that was technologically and economically incapable.

Apart from alien invasion, Falkayn's home planet has the threat of rebellion against its static semi-feudal social structure to deal with, as well.

An interesting book as interstellar stability fractures, peppered with many funny mangled van Rijn mots, so to speak.
