There are some earlier stories here from publications I've never heard of, and certainly would never, ever find, so it is good they are republished here. Some of them certainly read as early, too. However, the title story - The Engineer - (I believe the Reconditioned part comes because The Engineer was a collection, too, but this one has had more stories added) is up there with Asher's more recent best work. Hopefully his other stories from obscuresville will also appear again, too.
As such, clearly won't be in the class of The Gabble and Other Stories - which benefit from being in his most interestin setting - however, this is right on the 3.50 mark that a good collection aims for.
Also, there are tales from multiple future histories here other than the Polity, which give a change of pace.
