The second Detective Inspector Chen book sort of isn't. He doesn't turn up until significantly far into the novel. Most of the investigating here is done by his demon parter Zhu, at least until he gets back and the pace hots up - and it is reasonably sedate until then.
Along with that, a woman gets involved with an illegal advanced research project involved with experimenting in a supernatural power.
Then there's disagreement in Heaven on top of that.
