The Billion Dollar Boy - Charles Sheffield

Do not operate stargates while drunk.

No-one told this kid that, though. The immensely spoiled son of one of the handful of richest men on an Earth of 14 billion people is bored, and after seeing a tv show decides he'd like to go into space.

He does so, and makes a more than teensy navigational error.

This ends him up 27 light years away, and fortuitously rescued by a group of people that are dedicated to mining special heavy elements that exist in this area of space.

From having someone to clean his toenails he has to rapidly adapt to everything from cooking himself to actually doing work and getting along with the rest of the crew.

No-one believes he is wealthy enough to buy their whole fleet either.

A fun kids in space story with more exploits to be had of course.
