Genesis - Poul Anderson

A book that covers an epic scope and time. A galactic network of artificial intelligences exists, including one on Earth, named Gaia. Gaia it seems is a bit of an iconoclast, going her own way, and not communicating with the others as much as they are used to.

They steer their planets through trouble as they travel through the galaxy, and are also able to send out machine explorers to cover the vast interstellar distances over huge time periods.

A couple of human characters as uploads eventually investigate to find out what she is up to.

A little on the dull side until nearer to the end, though.
