Magic swords are nice, but pretty hard on your friends.
If the bad guys have one, though, and a shield as well, you really do need something to equalise.
When your hero gets one of those swords that likes to do the controlling thing though, there's going to be dead people, and some of them are likely to be your friends.
Even Spellbinder finds it hard to help Raven through this find and use mystical weapons only for the right thing and the right time trial.
