This got me another big chunk of Tom Rynosseros, so I'd be inclined to give it a 5 just for that, although that might be going a bit far. However, the Rynemonn chunk is fabulous. Leanne Frahm's creepy Rain Season has stuck with me for a long time, as well. Plenty of other good stuff. Don't get too many magician in the Australian past stories either, to speak of another one. Two introductions, and an afterword by Foyster.

Blue Tyson - Terry Dowling

The second book of the Rynosseros Cycle is just about as good as the first, but as a bonus, it is a little longer, with 10 parts rather than 8. That is a fine thing. A veteran of the scene now, Tom Tyson works to find out what is going on, for Nation, and for justice, and starts to get an idea of who he is and why he is haldane sensitive, in 'Breaking Through to the Heroes', and ends with him gaining more insight in 'Totem'. Just more brilliant stuff, really.

Mortal Fire - Van Ikin and Terry Dowling

Woohoo! Was pretty close to the reaction reading the Greg Egan story, and there is a melancholy Tom Tyson story, some Turner and even a selection by the other editor.

At the end, they give a selection of stories, one per author, or recommended reading, and a recommended anthology list for this interested.

There is also an introduction about how the editors came to the field, and also a useful bilbiography and further reading suggestions at the end, which certainly bumps it up a bit.

Mortal Fire : Inhabiting the Interspaces - Philippa Maddern
Mortal Fire : Axiomatic - Greg Egan

Centaurus The Best of Australian Science Fiction - Damien Broderick and David Hartwell

Really blood good, mate.

This is a very impressive collection. Average rating 4.23 out of 5. The editors are fairly aggressive in saying that this is the best oz sf collection put together, but it appears they are pretty much right. Van Ikin's Australian Science Fiction, taking the 'modern' section and not the excerpts, which would be an unfair comparison, is a touch under 4. Looking at what I have read of Gerrand's Best Australian Science Fiction Writing that will be be a decent score, but not likely this high.

Not that I have read all the older anthologies, either, but I will sometime. The fact is though, that Egan and Dowling mostly were not in those. The second editions of the Strahan and Congreve et. al. Year's Bests in each case are around the 3.75 mark or so, and the McNamara collections a bit under that. However, that is to be expected, given they are looking at the 'new', not the best of what is available, and all are collections that a fan (or student) of oz sf will want to have.

The first Card Sharks novel is a departure from some of the others, in that the lead character is a nat, and not a highly trained vigilante, at that.

Hannah Davies is looking into a crime, being an arson investigator. She uncovers a much bigger type of criminal than just an arsonist, however. Father Squid suggests to Quasiman that he help out Hannah, as much as you can suggest anything to him, anyway.

Alien Shores - Peter McNamara and Margaret Winch

The cover calls this a landmark collection of Australian science fiction. They are right. It is huge, and good. Chances of another one like it that is not a retrospective are pretty slim, and some fine work here. Even a piece that explains the Cetezoid-human conflict from Sean McMullen's Greatwinter trilogy, and a broad range of types of stories.

There is a preface and an intro, although if you are not too interested in the academic you can skim some of that in there. Worth a little bit though this.

Jokertown Shuffle - George R. R. Martin

Jokertown Shuffle is of similar quality to the last Wild Cards books. We learn more about Bloat and the Rox, and we discover who the man behind the Jumpers is.

Dr. Tachyon is still annoying, as he becomes involved with yet another woman, and Blaise is still causing problems.

The best part of the book is the mysterious character of Black Shadow getting a star turn, at last.

Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine 20 - Stuart Barrow

A solid issue. The non-fiction includes an Australian convention overview, which is interesting to those of us that don't go to explain a bit about what goes on. Also, a catalogue of funny physics stuffups, including that Albert dude. A couple of interviews, the more interesting being with an artist.

Nichols' reviews here are good, the Exultant review, a book I really probably wouldn't have ever bothered looking at sounds intriguing, and even more welcome is a look at Chris Lawson's 'Written In Blood', a book I have never seen and this is probably more info than you would get anywhere else bar cornering the author somewhere. The other two I didn't look at, (Bishop/Luckett), as won't ever be reading those.

So the other stuff than fiction is pretty cool here.

One Eyed Jacks - George R. R. Martin

Easily the weakest Wild Card novel so far, there is a good story about the four people that are caught up in the body of the joker/ace, Oddity though. The detail about Jerry Strauss isn't bad, either.

The conflict between Dr. Tachyon and his extremely powerful and untrained relative Blaise, continues to escalate.

The main problem starting here is a group that is able to 'jump' into different bodies, in a mental sense. This makes them very hard to control. Shadowy figures are at the heart of this menace.

Down and Dirty - George R. R. Martin

Down and Dirty is down and dirty in a criminal sense. Apart from the continuing depredations of Puppetman and Ti Malice, there is a gang war on. This is between the mafia and an asian group. Bagabond and her friend Rosemary Muldoon, a lawyer with a secret identity as a mafioso leader, become intimately involved with their friend Sewer Jack, the werealligator.

While Yeoman and the aforementioned deal with the gang situation, another Wild Card outbreak happens thanks to Croyd Crenson and one of his new forms. This version of the virus can affect even previous Wild Card victims, so an ace posse must try and stop him without killing him.

The Year's Best Australian Science Fiction and Fantasy 2 - Jonathan Strahan and Jeremy Byrne

This is another very good collection of work by some of the top writers around. The authors here include Sean Williams, Terry Dowling and Greg Egan, for example. In fact, Sean Williams appears twice, as he co-authors a tale with Simon Brown, along with his stand alone work.

A very interesting anthology, and they throw in an overview of the situation as well, for a bit of a bonus.

The Further Adventures of the Joker - Martin H. Greenberg

Continuing on from the Batman craze, the Joker is such a popular Batman villain that the publisher and editor must have decided he should feature in his own title. This book, is still, of course, full of lots of Batman.

George Alec Effinger is back, as is Resnick, and we have the two Joes, Cavalieri and Lansdale, among others.

Another fine collection.

New Ceres 2 - Alisa Krasnostein

http://www.newceres.com/doku.php?id=issue_2:inside_issue_2

This time I had a look at some of the world information listed. http://www.newceres.com/doku.php?id=world_design:new_ceres

New Ceres is in the 82 Eridani system, and space travel happens but technology is tightly controlled on the actual planet, so horses and sail modes of transport are used. If anyone is familliar with Peter F. Hamilton's Reality Dysfunction, then the planet that makes the really, really expensive 'Tears' grog is somewhat similar, politically.

The stories are again all good. This is really quite surprising, but it did look like a good lineup. That is 100% so far for above average stories over the 2 issues. Quite impressive, none being of the 3.5 maybe 3 type, only perhaps Lake's 'A Tower To the Sun' a tossup which way the score went as far as 3.5 or 4, so call that 3.76 if you like.

Some old fashioned mystery, some silly, some humour, and even poignancy.

Mist and Murder - Lucy Sussex
A Tower To the Sun - Jay Lake
Sufficiently Advanced - Stephen Dedman
The Bride Price - Cat Sparks

Droll detective dame finds spooks suspicious, suggests science instead.
