Inconstant Moon - Larry Niven

The moon suddenly has greatly increased luminosity. Gradually the protagonist begins to realise that this heralds an astronomical disaster, and has to work out how to spend his last night alive.

He has a brainwave, realises he might be wrong, and along with his girlfriend try and take shelter in her place, which is high above the ground, in case his second idea is correct.
