The Spider Strikes - R. T. M. Scott

Mr. Wentworth is certainly a ruthless character. Shoots a card sharp bad guy agent as quick as look at him. This book is written to make The Spider a slightly updated Sherlockian style hero, if rather more violent, violin and all. This completes complete with a Moriary style opponent, Mr. X. The Mr. is actually a Dr., it appears. He also meets a defenestration style end, being given a flying lesson by the Spider. The body count has escalated quite a bit by this time. This may well be meant as a counterpoint to the methods employed by The Shadow.

The hero, of course, has a good looking girlfriend, but she is very bright. The coolest character may just be Apollo, the Great Dane. Shades of Ace the Bat Hound, at least the Batman Beyond version.
