Konrad Arflane is a captain of an ice ship. Life is hard and getting harder for such men, as the climate is warming up. Heat is anathema to them. He comes across a man and rescues him and takes him home, he is greeted with surprise, as it is uncommon for ice men to help others.
This man has a position of power in his own society, and also a beautiful wife.
