Just not a very good writer. Ok to read if you are 6 and hadn't discovered Tolkien, I suppose. I just do not understand how such poor writing does so well. Fun concept, I guess, even if not hugely original. Except for the groovy hoccerball on broomsticks, of course. The writing is just not bearable for me. Managed 20% and that was it for me, for good.
